Porthkerry Leisure Park

Porthkerry is a holiday park on the coast of the Vale of Glamorgan, a stunning part of South Wales just to the west of Cardiff. This region is famed for its many friendly independent shops and restaurants, legendary history, and beautiful countryside and coastline - the majority of which is a designated Heritage Coast thanks to its natural beauty.

The Vale of Glamorgan also benefits from being extremely easy to get to, with motorway access, airport and rail connections in the area. Porthkerry itself is less than 25 minutes' drive from the M4 and from there, the best of the Vale of Glamorgan is only a short car ride away.

1. Cardiff

The Welsh capital has a great reputation for its bustling and cultural city centre. From the shopping, museums and variety of eateries you’d expect in a big city, to unique landmarks like the Principality Stadium and Cardiff Castle, you’ll be spoilt for choice in Cardiff.  

You can drive to Cardiff city centre in 30 minutes, or park up at the nearby station and catch a train.

2. Beaches and coastline

There are plenty of gorgeous beaches close to Porthkerry Leisure Park:

  • Whitmore Bay, Barry - perfect for families, with gently shelving golden sands and a busy seaside promenade
  • Cold Knap Bay, Barry - this large, pebble beach has a relaxed and quiet atmosphere
  • Dunraven Bay, Bridgend - a popular sand and pebble beach with rock pools
  • Newton Beach, Porthcawl - this huge beach has plenty of room for everyone, including dogs year-round
  • Rest Bay Beach, Porthcawl - a sandy beach which is perfect for watersports    

Porthkerry Leisure Park is also very close to the stunning scenery of the Glamorgan Heritage Coast. This 14-mile stretch of coastline from Porthcawl to Aberthaw (which is about a 10-minute drive away) is perfect for walking, or finding a great spot for a picnic with a view!   

3. Barry Island Pleasure Park

A household name since 2007 thanks to Gavin and Stacey, but actually around since the 1800s, the Barry Island Pleasure Park is fun for all the family. There’s a rollercoaster, log flume and plenty of other classic fairground attractions and amusements to enjoy!

It’s only a 15-minute drive from the Porthkerry Leisure Park and free to enter. Just pay for tokens to get on the rides or attractions.

4. Porthkerry Country Park

If you love escaping to the countryside, look no further than the Porthkerry Country Park - just down the road from the holiday park. 

With 220 acres of woodland, meadows, nature walks, picnic sites, an adventure playground and a cafe, this is much more impressive than your average park! It’s a lovely slice of nature and wildlife right on your doorstep. Plus, dogs are welcome too.

5. Play a round of golf

The Vale of Glamorgan is a golfer's paradise with plenty of well-established golf courses and clubs in the area, for a range of ability levels. It's a beautiful region for picturesque, sweeping courses with beautiful views over the sea.

Many of the local golf courses welcome new visitors as long as you book a tee time in advance. Some also have on-site golf shops, driving ranges and clubhouses for a drink or bite to eat after a game.
